The strong medications that are given to people who have HIV – antiretrovirals – may be put those very people at risk of breaking their bones.
In a study published in the latest issue of Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, researchers found that percentage of fractures increased more than 60% percent in those infected with HIV compared to patients without HIV infection.
The study group was unusually large, well over 8,000 patients with HIV and 2 million of people without HIV, who were the control (comparison) group.
This type of information is important because it helps doctors understand that they should look for thinning bones in this population.
