Personalized Wedding Rings: Trendy or Tacky?

Christine over at Our One Heart was talking about Personalized Wedding Rings. No, no… not something etching inside the band, like initials or your wedding date. This is something on the outside of the band. A message that the world is meant to see.

Is it just me or have wedding rings (and engagement rings for that matter) gotten extremely complicated?

I’ll be honest, I’m a plain gold band kind of guy. I think I’ve had my ring polished once in ten years, and I don’t expect I’ll do it again. I like the wear and tear… evidence that it’s been worn through everyday life and a good number of years.

Kerri picked out her own wedding band, and it’s a little fancier… but not much. I picked out the engagement ring, a simple gold band and round cut diamond, so she doesn’t have one of those combo-wrap thingies. And compared to most of what we saw in the jewelry cases even a decade ago it’s pretty simple. (Of course out budget was pretty simple back then, too.)

Maybe I’m just getting crankier in my old age but those fancy-shmancy, wedding bands seem more about showing off to strangers than about expressing a commitment between husband and wife. They say, “Look at me, world! I’m married!” Harrumph… kid’s these days…

What do you think? Am I right, or am I just well on my way to becoming an old poop?

  1. I think you’re becoming an old poop! lol Just kidding. I couldn’t resist, since you asked. We originally bought me a plain gold band and a round solitaire. Later, when we got more money, we added a diamond jacket to it. So now, it’s 3 pieces. It’s still simple, but pretty.
