Pest Control Timing

Are pests more vulnerable during certain times of day?

As it turns out, the answer is yes, thanks to the biological clocks of insects. Researchers from Oregon State University found that circadian rhythms in some insects may cause them to be more susceptible to pesticides at different times of the day. However, getting a pest control person out during the times insects appear to be weakest may be difficult.

The pest study revealed that insect defenses against propoxur and fipronil (two commonly used pesticides) are weakest around dawn, dusk or the middle of the night. Their defenses are strongest around mid-day.

Louisa Hooven, lead author of the study, indicated that triple the dose of one pesticide was required to have the same deadly effect on fruit flies during their times of stronger resistance, compared to times of day they’re weaker. Although the study results may be most helpful for growers, it’s still interesting to think of pests and they pesky biological clocks!

In their report, the researchers note: “In some cases, the clock, together with the dose, may make the poison.”
