We have all at some point in our lives come across a drain that is running slow in our homes. One thing we don’t have in our tool sheds are the big powerful drain cleaning machines that the professionals use to unplug something when they get clogged.

Once you have noticed that your shower is running slower then normal there is usually only a few reasons why. The biggest problem for any type of bathroom drain is normally caused by hair build up and soap. Hair gets caught in the strainers (the section of the drain you see) and sometimes gets stuck on soap build up inside of the pipes. Like in today’s video I will walk you threw how to unplug a shower drain, where the problem is caused by hair build up in the strainer.

The first thing you are going to want to do is get yourself a small flat screwdriver so you can remove the top of the strainer. Most of the times they pop off very easily. Once the strainer is lose, lift it off. You should be able to see a big pile of hair wrapped around the grid of the shower strainer. With a pair of gloves on, pull the hair off of the strainer and then re-install the strainer. Test shower and your all done

Basement showers are a lot easier to unclog then bathtubs simply because the shower strainers catch a lot of the build up. In some cases hair can get stuck on soap build up further down the line and if this happens try using a plunger. Make sure there is water in the shower so you can use it to push the blockage out of the way when your plunging. If that don’t work you might have to call a plumber to unclog the drain.

*NEVER* use harsh chemicals like Liquid Plumber in any drains in your house. They are very toxic and can crack drain lines very easily even if they are plastic and cause flooding or leaking inside of ceiling area’s or floors.

Safety tips for today’s post!

  1. Work gloves are a must
