Plus-size Women Opting for Own Yoga Classes

Plus-size yoga classes, such as Buddha Body Yoga mentioned in a recent New York Times article, are becoming more popular.

One reason for the demand is that some plus-size women may feel out of place as one of the only larger women in a class. Also, some instructors aren’t tailoring classes enough to assist plus-size women with poses that may be more difficult due to weight.

Part of me says these classes are fine because they’re encouraging better health and stress reduction. However, the idea that larger women feel so out of place in typical yoga classes makes me sad.

If you go to yoga, do you compare your body to those around you?
