It's probably his only way to really stay somewhat "anonymous," or without people knowing right away who he is. If he met someone in the grocery store they'd probably know right away who he is. I don't think it's such a big deal that he was trying to meet someone online, especially in this day and age, where it's becoming more and more common. I wasn't the type to places an ad in the paper, yet I met my husband online when I least expected it! Why not?
