Poll: What Wine Behavior Gets Your Goat?
In light of my last rant (forgive me, the blood was still running hot), I thought it was time for another poll. When you are wine tasting, what is the thing that is most likely to mess up your experience? I thought of a few actions, but if yours isn’t on the list, feel free to write in.

Hey Farley
I tried to add in a vote but it wouldn’t let me. SO in addition to my answer of bar hoggers I would vote for people who wear WAY TOO MUCH perfume/cologne.
cheers
John
Here here! I second the too much perfume issue.
I go to a lot of public tastings in addition to tasting rooms, and while not getting to taste the wine since Joe Jerkoff is hogging the bar is annoying, it’s even worse to taste a nice zinfandel that smells like White Diamonds since Thelma from Iowa poured the entire bottle on that morning.
Oh, man! I can’t believe I left that one out! And we were just commenting on that issue this Saturday, as well. I wonder why it wouldn’t let you add, John. I’m still kinda new to this poll thing. So I added it myself.
Maybe because I remember back to my own days doing the same as a college student, but I would have to say underage drinkers sneaking in and being rowdy. All too commonplace in the city.
The perfume/cologne is def the worst offense on that list but, also high on my list is just people being super loud. I guess I’m kinda crotchety but, I need to concentrate a little when I’m tasting, and I can’t do that when people are being really loud/obnoxious. We have a little joke for that circumstance: “I can’t hear myself taste!”
Hmmm… I guess after raising kids I can shut out just about any loud noises, so kids and wine geeks are no big deal (we just hand them a Frisbee and send them outside)(the kids, I mean!) Being tall and large, nobody can hog a bar like I can, and you’ll move if I need you to!-) Ms. Chard is just sad – I usually just cajole them to try this “just like a Chardonnay only completely different.” Folks drinking, not tasting get cut off in my tasting room at a certain point.
This leaves us with Mr. or Ms. Stinky Pants, probably the one you can really do nothing about except buck up and take it. What surprises me is that some TRs will actually bring this on themselves: I visited the TR of a fairly famous winemaker in Los Olivos a few years ago, and half the place was full of stinky soaps and candles. Ugh.
