Five to 10% of pregnant women develop a condition called pre-eclampsia, or high blood pressure. Pre-eclampsia must be managed well because if it progresses, it can develop into a very severe condition – that can be fatal – called toxemia.
Researchers have found that pre-eclampsia can be a sign that a woman is at risk of developing heart disease later on in life. This means that there should be follow up after childbirth. Doctors who treat women who have had children, should ask about the women’s pregnancy history, including complications like pre-eclampsia.
