Pregnant Women Urged to Get Vaccines

Today, eight leading national health organizations partnered to urge pregnant women to get the H1N1 flu vaccine, as well as the regular seasonal flu vaccine.

The organizations include the March of Dimes, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Nurse-Midwives, the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses, the Infectious Disease Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
This joining together is a powerful statement. The group believes that the normal changes during pregnancy make pregnant women particularly vulnerable to the flu. They note that H1N1 has proven very dangerous to pregnant women.
It’s understandable that pregnant women may be hesitant to take a new vaccine, but the experts noted above remind us that the vaccine has been proven safe and effective in clinical trials.
What’s next?
If you’re pregnant and haven’t been vaccinated against seasonal flu or H1N1, talk with your doctor today. The joint statement by the groups listed above reads, “We strongly recommend all pregnant women receive immunization for seasonal flu NOW and H1N1 flu as soon as this vaccine becomes available.”
