Pregorexics?

Just when you think you’ve heard it all. People with anorexia nervosa, often called anorexics – which I don’t like because it’s not who they are, it’s what they have – don’t choose to have anorexia nervosa. So, when we hear of a “disease” or a “problem” called pregorexic, we may think that there’s another physical or health problem.

It’s not.

Pregorexic is an invented lifestyle that some women have chosen because it’s the new in thing to not look all that pregnant, even if you are. That means dieting and exercising your heart out to be sure that you’ll drop back down to your prepregnancy weight asap after the baby is born. After all, we can’t go around as nature intended, right? Why make sure we’re healthy and that our baby is getting all they need. What’s more important? That baby is healthy that mom’s ego is stroked just a little bit more whenever someone says “oh! but you don’t look X months along!” or “Oh! from behind, you don’t look pregnant at all!”

Here is an interesting article about the phenomenon: Plague of the pregorexics: How women are dieting and exercising through pregnancy at the cost of their baby’s health. I’m going to be blunt. You want to be stupid? You want to play with fire? You want to gamble on your child’s well being? Well then you just go right ahead and make sure you look your best when you’re delivering.
