October 9, 2008 by Marijke Durning, RN

One of the long-lasting problems that some women develop during or after pregnancy is leaking urine, called urinary incontinence. This is often a problem that women suffer silently because of embarrassment and sometimes doctors not being sensitive to the issue.

Women have long been encourage to perform Kegel exercises (Video: Kegel exercises) but now researchers have gathered information from 15 independent studies and found that if women are given one-to-one instruction on how to perform pelvic floor muscle exercises and they practice, they are much less likely to experience urinary incontinence during pregnancy or after.
