Product Review: I tried Rice Milk Cheese

Sarah and I had an opportunity to try some Rice Milk Cheese.

This cheese, made by Galaxy Nutritional Foods, is the first non-Soy Vegan Cheese. It’s an excellent lowfat source of calcium. In addition, it’s:

*Casein Free

*Gluten Free

*Preservative Free

*Cholesterol Free

*Trans Fat Free

We tried the Pepper Jack, Cheddar, and Mozzarella shreds.

We tasted it straight out of the wrapper, then used it in a couple of recipes. The slices make an awesome quesadilla- we used a mixture of two cheeses- and the shreds were perfect for a pizza.  Sarah did not like the cheese unmelted, but if you have a child who is used to vegan cheese, they would be fine. It has a sort of powdery texture – I think she did not like that. I liked it cold, but I preferred it melted.

In the past, I’ve used the Galaxy Nutritonal Foods Soy Veggy slices (very, very yummy) and I will probably purchase those instead of the Rice Milk Cheese, but it’s nice to know that there is a vegan good alternative. Not everybody can eat Soy and this is a good, tasty product. If you live in the US, you can find a $1 off coupon here.

Hhmm, that reminds me, I think I better make sure that Eliza, at She Knows Coupons knows about this coupon.  Who doesn’t enjoy saving a buck??

Hey. I drink Rice Dream and like it with cereal, but had no idea about the cheese! I’ll look for it.

  2. Michelle says:

Rice Dream is good stuff. Don’t forget to print out the coupon, Peggy. :D

    Thanks for commenting.

I recently looked at the ingredients for this rice cheese and it is actually NOT vegan. It contains casein (at least the kind sold at Whole Foods in New York City). I am not sure where this is available without casein but if you are concerned about this ingredient, continue to always read ingredients!

  4. Rosy says:

Where can I get it in Australia?

  5. Michelle says:

Hi jmack. The literature that I received with this brand said that it did not contain casein. Thank you for pointing out that other brands do contain it though. You are smart to read the ingredients.

Hi Rosy, I would ask your local supermarket or health food store if they would consider carrying it. Mention the Galaxy brand or see if there’s something made over your way.

When they shipped it to me, it was shipped with dry ice. I imagine it would cost a lot to have it shipped down your way.

Let me know if you find it there and we can share it with the other readers.

    Thanks for your question.
