Lifeway Kefir Probiotic Wellness Bars in Pomegranate, Sweet ‘n’ Salty Peanut, and Chocolate Crisp
The Claim to Fame
In their own words…
There are Power Bars and health bars, but Lifeway Foods is introducing the first probiotic bars. Probiotics are the healthy bacteria found in many yogurts on the market and can help build a stronger immune system. The Kefir Wellness Bar can go for prolonged periods of time without refrigeration and are great for people on the go who are trying to eat healthy.
The packaging claims that each bar contains 10 live and active Kefir cultures. The Pomegranate bar is labeled “Very Low Sodium,” the Sweet ‘n’ Salty Peanut “Good Source of Dietary Fiber,” and the Chocolate Crisp “Good Source of Iron.”
Where to Find It
Lifeway also makes a variety of beverages and other probiotic snackfoods, and their products are widely available in grocery stores and healthfood stores nationwide. This map from Lifeway will help you find a local retailer.
Kristen’s Opinion
I’m a sucker for anything covered in yogurt, and these-yogurt coated snack bars were no exception. I didn’t particularly like the Chocolate Crisp bar because I didn’t think it tasted much like chocolate, but I could totally eat it. I also didn’t think the Pomegranate bar tasted like pomegranate, but I really liked it all the same. The Sweet ‘n’ Salty Peanut bar was AWESOME and it’s a good thing they didn’t send me a whole box to try because I fear I would eat the whole thing. Delish! Overall, the peanut bar is probably the only one I would buy, and I will definitely be looking for it next time I go to the store.
Who Will Love It
Anyone who likes granola bars in general and Power Bars will probably adore these. They’d be great for a snack on the go, and of course they’re good for your digestive system with the probiotics. They’re probiotic though, so leaving them in a hot car is a no-no. Think cool cabinet or desk drawer instead.

Kefir is pronounced (kef e-er). It is a refreshing cultured-milk beverage that is loaded with nutritional benefits. It is made by culturing fresh milk with kefir grains. Kefir grains are not to be mistaken for cereal grains; they are a soft, gelatinous white biological mass of proteins, lipids (fats), and a soluble-polysaccharide kefiran complex. They are famous for there vast mixture of specific friendly (LAB) Lactic-acid Bacteria and yeasts.
This is the most potent source of probiotics (friendly bacteria) you can find. In most probiotic pills found in stores you will find about 15 different strains of friendly bacteria, for example (Lactobacillus bugaricus and Streptoccocus thermophilus) are just 2 of the more well known strains.
To learn more about the different strains click here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Probiotics
but once again Mother Nature has out done the laboratories, a natural kefir grain contains 42 different strains of friendly bacteria. There is no comparison here. Kefir grains are far superior to the probiotics you will find in a bottle.

oooohhh.. lifeway kefir probiotic bars sounds delicious.
i wonder how healthy they are though…
over the years I’ve learned that even if something that is supposedly healthy, is commercialized too much, it can lose its “healthy” aspect.
I just hope lifeway commits to promoting healthy lifestyles with their products instead of their bottom line. And I do hope that this post on buying kefir from stores is not spot on about commercial kefir.
