Prompts Everywhere You Look

I was thrilled today when I arrived home to a parcel in the mail. What could it be? Turns out I’d won a book by our very own Tammy Powley, who blogs about Jewelry & Beading for B5media.com, too. The book? Making Designer Seed Bead, Stone, and Crystal Jewelry.
I won the book by responding to one of those “In 25 words or less…” competitions in a magazine. These competitions make great journal writing or general writing prompts. I see them in every magazine I pick up. Not only are you forced to express yourself in a limited number of words, but you stand the chance of actually winning something.
You can snip them out of magazines and stash them in the pocket in the back of your journal to use later, even if you don’t end up entering. Not all of the competitions are boring. I won this book by writing about something I really enjoy when I’m sitting around with the family in the evenings. If the prompt itself seems a bit narrow, use your imagination and write about an aspect of the question. Really, the idea is simply to write on something you might not normally consider.
