In September, I wrote about a drug in development, pegloticase, that was showing promise for treating painful gout (New drug being studied for painful gout). Now, a presentation at the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology has confirmed this promise.
Pegloticase – brand name Puricase – was given to 212 patients, mostly men who where on average 55 years old. The patients received the medication or a placebo by intravenous over a course of 6 months. The results of the study showed that patients who took the medication had less uric acid than those who took placebo. As well, the patients who had the medication were better able to walk.
