Put Limits on Your Email – Motivate Me Monday

Unless your email messages contain life or death situations or can make or break a deal, try to limit the number of times you check your email every day. I’ve always heard that it’s best to set aside 3 chunks of time a day to check email: one in the morning, one in the afternoon and one before your work day is over. Checking email can be a great way to break up your day and take a break from projects.
This is something that I am trying really hard to work on. I check my email WAY too much and I find that it steals valuable time away from my day. This is a motivation I need and plan on applying this to my work day. I’ll let you know how it goes.

I am in the same boat. I must resist! I must resist!
This is something I’ve been trying to work on lately too. I’ve noticed that I’ve been getting way behind in my housework. It seems I sit at the computer and keep checking email and such. I must be more disciplined!
I have a rule – no checking my email until my blog posts are written first.
I don’t read certain kinds of mail anymore – forwards. Ever.
If news is in my in-box for a few days – Jezebel.com or MotherJones or something I have a read it now or delete it forever policy.
2008 is going to see me come up with a great email filing system.
I’m a big fan of making email serve you rather than the other way around. I’m a morning person, always have been. I start focussed and productive and tail off throughout the day. I usually prefer to avoid checking my email until around 10.30, to really max out on my productive time. Nothing bad has happened yet.
@Tami – It’s hard isn’t it?
@Karen – We are in the same boat. Housework verses checking email….email always seems to win!
@Tracee – great rules! I’ve been deleting like crazy lately too. Shoot me an email when you come up with that filing system.
@Tim – you mean the world hasn’t ended yet?
That’s a good rule to have.
I was subscribed to 135 blogs in my google reader earlier today. I talked myself into reducing it down to 31 blogs. Don’t worry, this is one I love, so I won’t be unsubbing it.
Lol! Thanks Tami.
I’ve also cut down on the number of blogs I read. I have a handful of ones I read everyday and another handful I read every week. Glad you’re sticking around!
