Put Together a Room Dream Book

When I moved to my new old house, I bought a binder and some pocket folders. I labeled a folder with the name of each room and then I tore every one of those dog eared magazine pages out of a massive stack of magazines and filed them by room. I had a stack of pages left over for rooms I wished I had that might be added in the future, so I added an extra folder for them. I was amazed at how much space I saved and how much easier it was to find things. But then I realized that there were the book pages, the paint samples…

By the time I photocopied the pages I wanted to use (because I wasn’t about to tear up all my books to save on space!) and tucked fabric swatches and paint samples in, I had a wonderful resource to keep me on track as I worked on one room and then another. Of course, I still ended up getting off track or changing my mind about some of the ideas and I couldn’t possibly fit them all into a room anyway, but I really, really love my dream book.

If I am feeling like a room is a bit stale and needs something new, I flip through the book and there is a fabulous idea right in front of me. If I want to redo the whole room, I flip through the alternate theme ideas. If I can’t figure out what to put in that awkward corner, I…flip through the book.

Do you have a room dream book?

  1. I like the dream book idea because how often we flip through a magazine, find a picture with some great decorating ideas and try to ‘mentally’ photograph it. The problem is that by the time we are ready to make use of the idea, we totally forget what it was all about. Organizing pictures so that we could easily find great decors whenever we are ready for some remodeling is sure helpful.
