Question of the month: What designers or artists have had the most influence on you?

Mary Cassatt
For me, it’s Mary Cassatt, hands-down. I love the rest of the Impressionists too, but mostly Mary. I love a lot of different art, from a lot of different eras, but it always comes back to Mary. I collect antique photos of children to use in a lot of my work. I love the tenderness of her style. I don’t copy her, per se, but her influence is always in the back of my mind.

So how about it? Would you like to send me a shot of one of your pieces, along with your tribute to the artist who’s been most influential in your development? Write to me at cyndi@b5media.com and use the subject line “My art influences”. I’ll post them as they come in, with links to your site or blog. I just ask that you be willing to wait to see your response posted until after this weekend. As you’ll see in my next post, I’ll be a bit tied up!

Here is my answer to this post……
Interesting question, Cyndi. There are a lot of artists who have influenced me and some I’m sure I don’t even realize that have. First that comes to mind is Van Gogh with his glorious use of color. I love all the impressionists. Joseph Cornell’s assemblages are amazing. Georgia O’Keefe’s incredible flowers. Then there are the Dutch still life paintings I saw in the Riijksmuseum that knocked my socks off. There are many current artists Christo’s landscape wrappings and displays, Dale Chihuly’s unbelievable glass masterpieces. There’s my artist friends, Mary Haldeman, Karen Owen, Aileen Roberts, Angela Hoffmann, Joanne Huffman, Kathy Wasilewski, DJ Pettitt that all have inspired and influenced me.
