Quick Tips for Children’s Rooms

Here are a few quick tips for organizing your children’s rooms:

  • Don’t throw away anything that belongs to your child with out his/her permission. If they are old enough to make that decision of course.
  • Organize the room with the child in mind, not with you in mind. Think of their lifestyle and hobbies.
  • If you have a playroom for toys, then leaving toys out of the bedroom is a great way to handle clutter.
  • Give each child their own bulletin board to hanf their momentos and artwork. When they want to hang something new up, the old one can go into a bin that is designated for their memorabilia like artwork and paper awards.
  • Limit the amount of stuffed animals allowed on the bed or on top of the dresser.
  • Give each child their own box with crayons, scissors, colored pencils, etc. They will know exactly where their things are when they need them.
  • Give each child a treasure box. They can store their most special things in there.

I hope those tips help you just a little bit in clearing out the clutter in your children’s rooms.

    Julie,

I appreciate the simplify you use with your suggestions… thank you. In addition to your helpful tips… here’s a few more:

    • provide a lot of ways for kid’s to display their possessions… books, artifacts, hooks, etc.

    • once the stuffed animal collection reaches a point of saturation, make a deal with them that for every new one they add, they have to give two to charity

    • don’t place furniture components over heat and cooling vents… kids do not sleep well in a hot, humid, upstairs rooms (can you tell I live in Michigan?)

    • accommodate a variety of postures and positions for reading, creating, playing with each other (room on floor, area rug, pillows) kid’s love “forts” and micro spaces

    • insure good lighting for any specific tasks

    Hope this helps !

Thanks Jon! I think I’ll put this in another post, with credit to you so that I can be sure everyone sees them. This is too good to just leave in the comments. :)

Thanks again and come back with more tips whenver you feel like it.

Your dot number 1 is key… let them own the decluttering! It has taken me years to get rid of 50% of my physical junk. And I find I don’t miss it one bit. The manufacturing guys over at Evolving Excellence also commented on home clutter this weekend.

@Ken – It takes a little longer and involves more patience when you get them involved, but it is better in the long run. It teaches them so much.

I’m headed over to check out your article. Thanks for stopping by!
