Quilt Art Inspired By Nature

As I browsed through some of the quilts and patterns at Havasu Quilts (http://www.havasuquilts.com/), I was captivated by one called Dreams of Sedona.  The design with triangles and patterned fabric in  red, orange, and bronze or brown was truly reminiscent of the mountains around this Arizona town.

It brought to mind my first visit, when my husband and I rounded a turn in the road to gaze upon the red rock splendor.  The mountains surrounding this town continued to awe us as a friend took us on a tour.

The pattern, Dreams of Sedona, caused me to realize that many of our quilt art designs and patterns are drawn from our interpretations of nature.  My daughter incorporates flowers and leaves, along with mountains into many of her original designs.  She’s constantly snapping photos with her digital camera to see what unique effects she can capture.

Think of quilts you’ve made or designs you’ve seen…white for winter, bright flowers and greenery for spring, the hues of multi-colored leaves for autumn, brown and beige with cactus green for desert scenes.  Your quilts often change with the seasons and the natural scenes you view.

Once you realize the many themes you can incorporate from nature into your fabric art, you’ll see the world with very discerning eyes.  The book mentioned below gives you some ideas how other quiltmakers are inspired by nature.
