Rabbit Litter Box Training

Spayed or neutered rabbits can be successfully trained to use the litter box, allowing them to join you indoors. Rabbits that haven’t been altered probably won’t be successful at using the litter box exclusively since they will still want to scent mark.

Equipment for Litter Training a Rabbit:
- Large litter box designed for cats will work. Whether or not to choose a covered litter box is debatable. Just make sure it’s large enough for the rabbit to lounge around in comfortably!
- Litter made from recycled paper, like Yesterday’s News is often recommended by experts and vets.
- Cage for easier litter box training.
Clay litter should be avoided as the rabbit may ingest it during grooming. Ingestion of clay litter may cause blockages in the digestive track. Many vets also advise you to steer clear of pine and cedar for rabbit litter. They may release oils that are harmful to the rabbit’s liver and respiratory system.
House Rabbit Society suggests litter created with alfalfa, oat, citrus or paper. They also recommend litter training your rabbit in a cage until the rabbit successfully uses the box. The litter box should be placed in the corner of the cage where the rabbit is already eliminating.
