Rainy Day Morning Walk

It was one of those mornings when I dreaded even rolling over to turn my alarm off. Something in the air was preventing me from wanting to get up. When I realized – through my partly open window – that it was the RAIN that was creating that feeling in the atmosphere. I knew that this morning, even more than ever, I had to get going.

Why? Because a rainy day morning walk with Charlie means at least an extra 10 minutes added to my morning routine. And that doesn’t even include the drab slowness that comes with a rainy morning. I know I have to factor in extra time wrestling Charlie into the bathtub (ok, sink) rinsing the muck off her little paws and cleaning her underbelly. Although we’re outfitted with an excellent winter coat for those cold Canadian morning walks, I’ve yet to spring for the spring time rain accessories.

Here are my choices:

RAIN COAT

rainslickerallbreedChilly Dogs is the brand of Charlie’s winter coat and despite hiding under the hall bench when I pull it out, I know she loves it once it’s on. Their All-Season Rain Slicker claims to be great for cool, windy and wet spring or fall days. The outer shell is made of 200 denier polyurethane coated nylon so it protects against water and wind. The inside is lined with poly/cotton blends for warmth. Their typical Scotchlite 3M piping gives is that added touch for safety during those late night or early morning walks.

“The extended collar can be worn up for more rain and wind protection or down for flare.” Now isn’t that hip!

cosmopolitan_coat_red-cropHounds Around Town is another brand that makes a similar coat. They call this model the ultra chic Metro Slicker and claim it is both function and fashion. The coat is 100% waterproof – as it should be! – and keeps the undercoat from getting muddy as well as the dog’s head and back.

RAIN BOOTS

If you’re serious about keeping that pooch dry, right down to her little toes, then booties are the answer. Now, I’ll warn you that this requires a lot of patience, a sense of humor and don’t forget your video camera! When Charlie tested a pair of boots, the store owner lured her from one end of the store to the other with treats as her steps grew less and less cartoon-like. It would be pitiful if it were not so hilarious – hence the video camera. summersboot-beach

Once your dog gets used to the boots (and she will!) she’s be safe from muck and salt all year round.

Again, Hounds Around Town offers a summer boot that is breathable and durable, with double mesh fabric, called NEO-PAWS. It is ideally suited for the beach but the durable rubber soles can protect against any surface. This boot doesn’t just protect your pup’s paws but also protects things like hardwood floors, upholstery, boat seats and swimming pool liners from your dog’s nails. Smart, isn’t it?!

This second type of boot is entirely flexible. I’ve seen them in almost every dog store but they’re also available online at the Muttluks site.  This boot sports the reflective tape, stays on with strong velcro strips, and is water repellent. You can also choose from either fleece Lined or all weather Muttluks. Our family dog, Bridie had a pair of these that she refused to wear until her senior years when the tread became almost necessary. Then again, we were not very persistent in keeping them on.

Whatever you choose to keep your pup warm and dry (or to keep your morning routine down to a science), drop me a comment to let me know what works best!
