I have been given copies of Beads & Beyond’s DVDs to giveaway to readers here! B&B is a British jewelry and beading magazine that would like to introduce itself beyond the UK and Australia, so I will have to limit this giveaway to my Canadian and United States readers (sorry!). I will be doing another giveaway of a different DVD from this set on my mixed media arts blog, Jewelry & Beading, so please feel free to enter on both sites!
To enter, simply leave me a comment below, telling me your feelings about working with wood or papier mache, or how much you’d like to be working with them!
The description from the Beads & Beyond website:
Debbie Riehl is an artist who works in many mediums, but here she shows how the simple and easy art of papier-mâché can be cleverly combined with semi-precious stones and freshwater pearls to create highly original and attractive items that can be adapted to many uses.
Seeing a beautiful and delicate piece of work emerge from a solid block of wood like some living thing is a special experience. Adrian Hoe shows that with a few surprisingly simple and inexpensive tools and materials anyone can share this experience and enter the world of woodturning.

I have worked in wood & papier-mache. Bad eyesight has forced me to give up sharp knives & other tools, but I still can work in papier-mache & love it.

I have a woodshop with everything but a lathe. Why? I’m afraid of them! If I knew more about them I could advance another step in this exciting art. Have made some cabinets so far but nothing with legs – that would take a lathe.
Am self taught with paper mache and could use a better teacher!
I have only worked with paper mache’ a few times but really enjoyed it. I especially like the new paper mache’ strips available on rolls making it so much easier to work with!
I love working with beads because I can make them reflect my taste and my likes. Also I like making jewelry for others because it means so much more to you and to them.
I haven’t worked with paper mache in a long time, but I’m getting more into wood as part of an experiment in a different jewelry line. I have a miniature lathe that I think I can use to turn wooden beads on.
I love working with pearls – they are just so classic and charming! I don’t make papier mache beads – I have so many glass, crystal and stone beads that I don’t have a need to make more.
My favorite pearls are the irregular shaped ones that have a shiny finish. They add interest to each piece!
I have limited experience with both wood and paper mache but have supplies that could incorporate these items and I am always looking for new ideas to try. Recently I have been using wire, beads and fiber and think they would work with wood and paper mache as well.
I love the ideas of papier mache but am terrified of trying. I did so once, years ago and the stuff got moldy!! It did damage the piece, but I couldn’t learn from it since I wasn’t sure what to do to avoid it..
Anyway, it was a wonderful medium to work it. I wowuldn’t mind trying again, with some guidance
pearls and semi precious stones add sparkle and elegance to any piece of jewelry. I have 2 grand daughters that love bling so I am always looking for ways to make them happy. Pearls and semi precious always do.
I am a teacher, so papier mache is a cheap way to Involve my students with art. I’d love to find an affordable way to include wood.
I would love to be able to make either paper mache or wood “trinket” boxes. My friend Sandi Obertin from Rubber Nature Art Stamps makes some of the most exquisite little mixed media boxes. This would help me greatly…then I would have something to show off to her for a change!!!!
My husband works with wood and truly loves it. I usually work with glass(dichroic and stained but I like papier mache also. Haven’t used it lately though.
I have worked some with wood and really enjoy it. It has been a long time since I did any paper mache. I do alot of jewelry making with all sorts of beads. I especially like the wooden beads. Like Linda, I have several grand daughters who love coming to my house and going through all my new jewelry pieces. Of course to take home with them and to show off to their friends
I love paper mache; it is so user friendly and multi-purpose. You can make almost anything with it, from something simple to some pretty elaborate items.
Wow what a neat subject! Would love to learn more.
I love working with wood. The continuousness of sanding helped me calm down after a long day.
I loved it as a kid, but have forgotten much of it. Would love to teach my kids.
I am retired and a full time RVer… I plan to offer craft workshops in our RV park and surrounding parks, for the senior citizens. They love doing inexpensive, simple crafts, resulting in pretty, practical objects they can take home with them.
Woodworking is a wonderful way to express oneself. As a teenager growing up in the 70’s, woodshop was a required course for 8th grade! I really enjoyed my experience in class and I always told myself that I would one day buy equipment for a small shop. Now at 45 years young, I just bought my first five pieces of equipment. I plan to practice my wood craft. Thank you for a chance to learn about creating objects that express my connectedness to our earth and its’ natural beauty ….
I am really excited about the chase to learn how to make beads and jewelry out of wood. Thank you very much!
Great stuff. Nice to read some well written posts. A long way between them.
