Reading is More Than Books – How About License Plates?

When I teach reading and writing workshops for youngsters, I try to get them to understand that reading is a necessary part of life.  They need to read to function in a job, buying groceries, driving a car, preparing meals, etc.  So many tasks are much easier if we can read.

One of the enjoyable games my mom played with us (and I now realize it furthered our reading as well as our geography) was reading license plates.  Often when we traveled, she had us write down the license plates we saw.  We tried to see which of us four children had the greatest number when we reached our destination.  We had to spell the states correctly and try to find any slogans on the plates, too.

Even today, as a grandmother, I’m curious about the license plates when I go through our local town or travel a distance.  I’ve played this game with our daughter during travels and now with my grandchildren.

Do you have any license plate games that inadvertently further your children’s reading?
