Reading to Your Kids is Important

Reading to your kids is an important way to improve on all types of learning. It is the cornerstone to all of our child’s future. Without that solid foundation a child can really struggle in all subjects. With reading comes improved comprehension – understanding what the words are telling them. Take science, history, and even word problems in math. I know personally I was fairly good at math but when it came right down to the word problems I became easily confused. It wasn’t that I didn’t know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, but rather I didn’t really understand what the problem was asking me to do.

With superb reading and comprehension skills it can lay a great foundation for the improvement of all other subjects. So, I spend a lot of time with my kids reading. If they aren’t reading to me then I am reading to them. I even read my own books in front of them. Mommy reads a lot too. Our entire house is stocked full of books and we provide an environment in our home that gives our children the opportunity to grab books at their will.

I had read a study about a year back, and I can’t seem to find it at the moment but when I do I will post it here. But, the study showed that those children who do better and excel in school live in a home where books and reading were a large part of their lives and upbringing.

So here is an exercise if you want to participate. Search around and find studies or articles dating anywhere from present day back about how reading is important for your children. All you need to do is send me a link to the article and a link to your blog if you have one and I will post them here. Then we can have easy access to articles that show us how reading is extremely important.

  1. [...] I also noticed a good detailed post on how to shop for a toddler bookshelf. I think having books all over the house is a good thing. We all know how I feel on that issue. Read my post on reading to your kids. [...]
