Real Food: Real Life

So over on Pretty By Nature I embarked on a little health experiment the other day. I put the hubs and myself on a self imposed Raw Food Detox diet. Why? Well for the obvious reasons: look better, feel better. But also I wanted to be more conscious of what I was eating. I find myself mindlessly stuffing food in my mouth during the day and just not remembering what I ate. There are days when the only “meal” I have is dinner. So then what did I eat the rest of the day?, I often ask myself. It usually is something like, half of the banana my son didn’t finish, the rest of an apple he didn’t finish, a shared bowl of soup etc. You get the picture. So hopefully this detox would help me eat better in better proportions. So how’s it going?

Yeah well I fell off the wagon. Here’s the thing; I like hot food. All this did was make me want to grill the zucchini instead of eating it raw. However, I still feel good about it. If the goal was to eat healthier then we certainly are. I’m having to think about what I am eating and resisting the urge to stuff some crap in my mouth. So I’m still living up to my challenge but I had to amend it. Instead of eating 75% raw, it’s now like 25% raw. I did experiment and made a really yummy raw snack that I will be eating again. I made quick veggie lettuce wraps and they were DELICIOUS.

I had some orange and red peppers that I cut into thin strips. I sliced up some button mushrooms into paper thin slices and added it to the bowl of peppers with some clover sprouts and julienned carrots. I tossed the veggies with a little dollop of Dijon mustard, some sesame oil, sea salt and cracked pepper. Then I loaded the mix into some romaine hearts. It was really good and surprisingly filling. Here’s a recipe for another lettuce wrap from Cooking Light that I will try next. So I still feel like I am succeeding even though it wasn’t exactly how I planned. Wasn’t I just talking last week about setting reasonable expectations for myself? Lesson learned…again.

I agree. All changes should be done gradually and as tollerated. What good is it if I embark on a plan to eat nothing unless it’s live and raw if I can’t keep it up? That is obviously the best food to eat but it takes time to change our palette and habits. I’m using a new whole food juice product called “The Feast”. It helps me get the 5-13 servings of fruits, berries and greens necessary to maintain good health and it tastes great! You can try a sample at http://www.urilife.net/realfoodforlife
