Real Iron Chefs Drink Their H2O

At Morimoto, New York, you’ll find great food and plenty of water, or at least water bottles. Tadao Ando Architect and Stephanie Goto Design Group made sure of that when they designed the beautiful Morimoto.

LedLightRay has a great explanation about what’s happinging at Morimoto:

“Budgeted at $12 million, the interior of Morimoto features Ando’s trademark use of concrete, but with softer touches. Inside, he has draped the interior space in swaths of white fiberglass-reinforced canvas, which flows across every inch of the ceiling. Upon entry, dining areas and sushi bar surround a central staircase that leads diners to the bar downstairs. In the floor-opening of the staircase, a dramatic installation of 17,400 water-filled glass bottles are each hung horizontally from the ceiling down to the below-grade level. Each glass bottle is fitted with an LED light that renders the simple installation into a multi-media show.”

The glass wall below is 2 stories high and made of LED light fitted glass bottles.

I’ve actually seen my fair share of bottle built buildings and bottle enhanced walls — but this shimmering waterfall-like wall takes the cake. It’s really gorgeous.

My only concern with water bottle walls would be keeping them clean. I’m thinking that they were likely covered with some sort of dust repellent cover. Bottles tend to get grimy. But overall I think it’s a great idea and if you used recycled bottles this is a pretty green decorating scheme. Plus, just think of how healthy you’d be after drinking all that water!
