Recipe Friday – Milk Tea

As I mentioned, we’re all sick with a cold around this home. My oldest daughter has been having a sore throat in the morning when she wakes up, brought on because of post-nasal drip (eww) combined with sleeping with her mouth open to breathe, which makes it dry.

She usually has juice in the morning or a cup of hot chocolate. However, when she has dinner at her grandparents’ house, they make her some “milk tea” by giving her the tiniest splash of regular tea in a larger amount of milk, with some sugar. They serve it in a little demi-tasse and she feels grown up. Today when she woke up she asked in a raspy voice (ah, my drama queen) if she could have some milk tea. I made my own version of it to include some honey to help soothe her throat.

Milk Tea
1 cup milk
1 teabag of whichever tea you usually have around (I used plain old Salada tea)
1/2 teaspoon honey
Cinnamon and nutmeg to taste

Simmer milk with teabag in a pot over low heat until warmed through. Add honey and stir. Add spices to taste. Pour into a mug and add a bit of sugar if needed.

The honey was good for her throat, as was the warmth itself, and it was also very soothing in general so she had a nice way to ease into the day.

I completely agree — and watching kids in the danger zone as you’re trying to unwind at 10 p.m. is about as relaxing as pulling your nails out one by one. I do love Grey’s — what gets me, though, is the fake break-ups every other week between Meredith & McDreamy — can’t they read some self-help books & move on (together) already?!

  1. [...] In made a honey-lemon sore throat remedy for my wife when she had the same thing during pregnancy, and she quite liked it. The next thing that I might try is a tasty milk tea recipe from Inside Motherhood. [...]
