Relaxation exercises for pain management

August 16, 2008 by Marijke Durning, RN

If you’ve been looking for ways to relax in order to manage your pain, perhaps relaxation exercises may be the answer for you. Relaxation exercises are not physical exercises, ones that take a lot of effort or strain any muscles or body parts; they are mental exercises meant to help you concentrate on relaxing your body and, possibly, relieving your pain.

StopPain.org has a section on its site about relaxation exercises. This interesting section allows you to pick the type of imagery you want to include as well as the type of voice you want to listen to. If you want to give it a try, go on over to Relaxation Exercises.

Thanks for the pointer to this cool website. For me, walking meditation worked the best. There was something about being in motion that helped me move beyond pain.

Relaxation exercises are a big part of what keeps my insomnia under control. I try to do a 30-minute exercise every night when I go to bed. I was skeptical at first, but it’s really amazing the results I’ve had.

I’ve also successfully used relaxation to reduce the pain of my Migraine attacks. It’s much harder to focus on doing relaxation when I’m in a lot of pain, but that’s when it is most useful, and that’s why it’s important for me to continue to practice it.

    Thanks for posting this!

    Be well,
    MJ
