Veterans Day
When I was a child, November 11 was called Armistice Day, in honor of the end of World War I. Eventually it has become known as Veterans Day in recognization of all veterans, past and present, who have and are defending our country and freedom. The sight of the flag drew expressions of patriotism and pride.
I remember the time the Honor Roll (a large wooden plaque with names of World War II veterans) was set up on the lawn in front of the town hall in the village where I grew up. A star was placed after the names of those who gave their lives for their country. I don’t know that it was Veterans Day when the Honor Roll was unveiled, but for many years on November 11th, a ceremony was held before it.
I received notice from my hometown historical society that a Veterans Day recognition ceremony is being reestablished and someone would be honoring those serving in all wars, from the Revolutionary forward. For the earlier wars, they would be reenactors, while actual veterans from World War 11 forward would attend, along with present day servicemen and women.
