Remembrance Day

Today was Remembrance Day here in Australia. This is the day we remember those who died in war. To signify our debt of honour we observe one minute silence at eleven am. It’s easy to remember as it is the eleventh day of the eleventh month at eleven. I was in a busy store this morning while we stood silent for that one minute. Stopping to think that way in a place of so much activity had a profound impact on me today.
Later I spent time writing about silence in my journal. I did my usual thing, by defining what silence means to me, and went on to write how silence can actually speak volumes if you tune into it. I reflected on silent moments in my journal. Those days where no entries were written helped me realise that silence does speak, even in my journal.
Those days where there were no entries, they are moments of silence. At the end of each journal I leave several pages blank so when I reread my journal I can comment on those missed days and what my silence at that particular time meant to me. I hope you take some time to be silent in your journal, too.
*The poppy is a significant visual symbol for Remembrance Day.
