Report Cards

gradesTomorrow is a day of reckoning for my kids – report cards come out. I am hoping the grades are all good, but I have my doubts about a few of them.

Let’s talk! Do you let your kids know ahead of time what you expect? How do you handle disappointing grades? Do you pay your kids for good grades?

Some of the districts around here (including the one my stepdaughter is in) use the internet to post grades on a regular basis, so at any point you know what their report card is eventually going to look like. It actually works really well because then if they are slipping, you know BEFORE it’s too late and you can work together to fix it or talk about what’s going wrong. It’s a very valuable tool to have, especially with a teenager!

My DD goes to a small Catholic school, and they use edline. I love it! I know if she’s missing anything, what her grades are on a specific test. It’s really great. When she has gotten a less than stellar grade on something, I wait for her to come to me about it. The only time she didn’t it turned out the grade was entered wrong. She got a 21/25, NOT a 12/25.

I am one of those parents that truly believes that so long as my kids do their best – I am perfectly fine.

My 11th grader is a natural A student. She doesnt study much at all and the work, tests, and assignments come easy to her. She stays on the high Honor roll and Principals list.

Isaac (my 3rd grader) tries hard as heck but struggles with math a lot. His grades are C’s and B’s and he’s trying his best so that’s fine with me.

I don’t pay for good grades and bad grades due to you not applying yourself will earn you a good ole’ fashioned stern Talking To (perhaps a tweak in your TV/Fun schedule). Which in my house is close to murder :)

My dd loves school does well and we give very modest rewards for her grades every report card. Things such as a new shirt or a movie – just recognition and lots of verbal praise.

My son was very smart but just did not care about school. I tried every thing to motivate him but to no avail. He graduated with a C average.

I believe people are self motivated and there’s not much you can do to change them. People will excell in what they “love”. A lot of people do not love school, but go on to do well in a job or career they “love’.
