Review – 50 Rules Kids Won’t Learn in School
In a world of feel-good education where the number one concern seems to be political correctness, Charles J. Sykes presents 50 Rules Kids Won’t Learn in School: Real-World Antidotes to Feel-Good Education as a reminder to us all that first and foremost, life’s not fair (that’s rule #1).
The purpose of this refreshingly honest book, is to offer kids and parents a glimpse into the life lessons that we all face and that the current state of education is overlooking. As parents we need to help our children prepare for life in the real world, not wrap them in bubble wrap and expect the world to treat them like glass.
In the book, each of the 50 rules is introduced and then backed by a full chapter of no nonsense examples, stories and tips. Some of my favorite lessons presented in the book include:
2. The real world won’t cares as much as your school does about your self-esteem. It’ll expect you to accomplish something before you feel good about yourself.
4. You are not entitled…
9. Your school may have done away with winners and losers. Life hasn’t.
18. Life is not divided into semesters. And you don’t get summers off.
19. It’s not your parents’ fault. If you screw up, you are responsible.
22. You are not a victim. So stop whining.
35. If your butt has its own zip code, it’s not because McDonald’s forced you to eat all those Big Macs. If you smoke, it’s not Joe Camel’s fault.
47. You are not perfect, and you don’t have to be.
The book is such a quick read and once you pick it up it is hard to put down – partially because you find yourself nodding in agreement with the author’s reminders, but also because you will find yourself compelled to readjust one more page.

Do you think kids will read this book? I can imagine parents nodding their heads but kids giving it the finger and throwing it aside, if not in the garbage. lol
This is one great book. Nothing to shout about, but definitely something to ponder over. Maybe a good idea for my next post…
