Review and a Give-away: New Quaker Granola Bars with Protein

For families with busy after-school activities, the choice of an afternoon snack can become a hurried afterthought between carpool and the next sports practice. Starving children usually also ask for snacks that are high in sugar but empty in nutrition, when this is the time of day that they should really get food high in protein and energy.
Recently, I was sent some protein bars from Quaker, the Quaker Chewy Granola Bars with Protein, one with “Nutty Peanut Butter” and the another “Peanut Butter and Chocolate”. I was interested to find out if Quaker’s new product was any different or better than what’s in the market.
The package says “Quaker Chewy Granola Bars with Protein have all the delicious Quaker Chewy taste your family loves along with 5 grams of protein to help fuel their busy day. Made with the goodness of whole grain Quaker granola and yummy ingredients like peanut butter or chocolate chips, they’re great-tasting, wholesome way to keep your family going.”
(Review and the give-away after the jump)
Quaker Chewy Granola Bars with Protein has 110 calories, 0g trans fat and only 6-7g of sugar, all very good numbers for a snack food. But the main draw of the new Quaker granola bar is the higher amount of protein per serving. Other bars in the market normally only have 1 – 2.5 grams of protein. Only Slim-Fast has a diet bar with 15 grams of protein. One bar of Quaker with Protein should be filling enough for children, but obviously not enough for an adult appetite like mine.
If you like peanut butter, then the Nutty Peanut Butter variety is for you. The flavor and smell of peanut butter is strong but not too sweet or salty, and the bar is loaded with peanuts. The Peanut Butter and Chocolate variety has chocolate chips scattered, so it’s not too chocolatey; instead it reminds one of Reese’.
I would recommend these new granola bars from Quaker. They have enough calories and protein to burn by an active youngster, and tastes great too.
Quaker is happy to send one reader a sports bag filled with some fun (but practical) items for activity-filled family days (i.e., soccer ball, tennis balls, sports socks, fun shoelaces, water bottle, etc.), along with a few boxes of their Quaker Chewy Granola Bars with Protein.
So for the give-away, here’s how to join:
- Take the poll on this link: “How active are your kids after school“, then come back to the comments and share your poll answers, and your oldest child’s age group – preschool, gradeschool, or teen. ( I do need to double check because some entries are not voting).
- One entry per person
- It’s open to residents of the US and Canada.
- Contest ends 11:59 midnight EST on September 21, 2008 (Sunday). One winner will be randomly chosen and announced via blog and email the week after.
- If the winner does not reply within 3 days, he/she forfeits her winnings and an alternate winner will be chosen.

Elementary school
My oldest is 12 and I let her play video games or watch tv after school to relax. I never have any problems with her finishing her homework and I think the time to relax help keep school related stress lower.

My granddaughter is a preschooler and as active as they come.
i have a daughter who is a senior, a daughter who is a junior and a son in 6th grade..they all play soccer after school at this time of year..then comes basketball and then softball..they keep very busy

Kindergartner – one who misses the family while he is at school. He prefers to spend some time with his dad when he gets home from school then he will go outside to play with friends.
I have a preschooler who’s home right before lunch. She drops off her backpack and heads back outside to play with her brother. Poll results showed we’re like 38 out of 157 other families. As she gets older I’m thinking homework may come first. Thanks!
