Review: EasyCrisp Low-Calorie Egg Rolls

kahiki_vegetable-egg-rolls.jpgEgg rolls crispy from the microwave?

That was something I’ve never had, so I agreed to review the new EasyCrisp microwaveable egg rolls from Kahiki.

In the past I’ve avoided microwaveable egg rolls because they always seem to end up greasy and soggy. Kahiki claims that these are the “first-ever egg roll that’s designed to be microwaved.”

Hoping for a change, I tried the Kahiki Vegetable egg rolls and the Chicken egg rolls. I was also sent the Pork & Shrimp variety, but I’m not a fan of shrimp. I gave those away to my brother-in-law who loves shrimp. He hasn’t tried them yet, but I’ll update you if I can.

Egg Roll Crispness?

Both the Chicken and Vegetable egg rolls were very crisp! I don’t see how they could be more crisp. The Vegetable variety was actually slightly more crispy than the Chicken, but they are both still as far from soggy as you can get.

Egg Roll Taste?

Fresh, natural and light, but not like “diet” food. There were no hard edges on the wrapper, which was tasty and flaky. My husband tried these with me and he gave them two thumbs up. He said that the Chicken “actually tastes like chicken.” (In other words, it didn’t resemble chicken and taste like mystery meat as in some microwave meals.)

The egg rolls aren’t spicy exactly, but they do have slightly more black pepper than I like. However, keep in mind I eat very mild food in general. Most of you would love the black pepper level.

The accompanying sweet and sour sauce is good, but I felt that there should probably be a little more sauce included. If you’re a sauce freak, you may want to have a little extra on hand.

Egg Roll Content?

The Vegetable (cabbage, carrot and egg) rolls have just 70 calories per egg roll, while the Chicken (cabbage, cooked white meat chicken and egg) contains 80 calories per egg roll (both without sauce). The Pork & Shrimp egg roll contains 100 calories per egg roll, without sauce.

There’s no trans fat or artificial additives/preservatives. No MSG is added.

These egg rolls are a product of the US, and you may download the full ingredient list and nutrition info at Kahiki.

Easy to Cook?

Yes, but keep some scissors on hand. You’ll need to cut open the plastic packaging that contains the three egg rolls and also cut each end of the egg roll pouch that goes in the microwave. The egg roll is cooked with the pouch around it, and that’s part of what helps with the crispness.

Each egg roll takes only 2:15 to cook in a 1,000 watt microwave (700 watt may take slightly longer). You may cook two egg rolls for 4:15 in a 1,000 watt microwave. The egg roll pouch is easy to remove later if you open it along the seam.

Sorry, I didn’t try the conventional oven method. The microwave method worked so well, I didn’t feel the need to try it. (If you cook these in the conventional oven, you’ll need to remove the pouch.)

The boxed pack comes with three separately packaged egg rolls (in pouches) and three separate sauce packets. I think that’s a good idea. These are no small egg rolls, and you may only want one at a time if you’re just having a snack.

I will probably buy these myself next time I’m looking for an egg roll to go with a meal or as a snack.

Have you tried them?

  2. Hi Cyndi. These are low in fat.

I’ve yet to make my own egg roll from scratch, but maybe I’ll try it one day.
