Inducing a baby, medically encouraging labor, is usually done if there is a medical reason or if the doctor and patient agree that the pregnancy has gone beyond the "acceptable" time and there is concern for the health of the baby.
Inductions, done by giving medication by intravenous, can result in a harder labor and often, doesn’t work completely and may result in an emergency Cesarean section (C-section). For these reasons, non-medically necessary inductions are not recommended. However, it seems that some women are doing just this and it could be that it is due to economics, more than anything else.
According to a study that was published in the September issue of the journal Medical Care, induction rates in the state of Illinois induction rates nearly tripled among white women and more than tripled for African-American women. The rates more than doubled for those in other ethnic groups. The study took place over 12 years and involved over 2 million women who delivered a baby.
