The Mexican beach resort city located on the Pacific Ocean first became a well known American tourist destination in 1963, after the motion picture The Night of the Iguana was filmed on location nearby. The much-publicized affair between Richard Burton, who was in Puerto Vallarta filming the movie at the time, and actress Elizabeth Taylor,   brought the beach resort into the eye of the general public.

New roads leading into Mexico’s interior, along with a modern airport, and a much-publicized trip by President Nixon to sign a treaty with Mexico also helped bring and American tourists to this destination.

In the late-80s, the film Predator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Blow, a movie about the introduction of cocaine to mainstream America, starring Johnny Depp, was also filmed close to the city.
