This past week was the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. In honor of its victims, this week’s Saturday genetics quiz question is:

What kinds of DNA damage does radiation cause?

Answer:

  • Rupture of the strand, DNA strand breaks – single and double
  • Alteration to bases
  • Destruction of sugars
  • Crosslinks and formation of dimers

    Are they all correct? If I was going to pick one, I’d say alteration to bases.

    You must have been or still are a very good student! I corrected the question so that it said kinds plural instead of singular. ;)
