Saving the Big Cats

While the title Saving the Big Cats may seem like it refers to wildlife conservation, the book is really about something very different.
Stephen McCloud’s photographs and corresponding stories give readers a special look into one of the US’s largest exotic feline rescue centers.

The Exotic Feline Rescue Center (EFRC) near Center Point, Indiana is home to more than 160 big cats, including tigers, lions, pumas, leopards, bobcats, ocelots and more.
McCloud, a volunteer at EFRC, has been photographing the big cats for years. His book gives you access to many cats that aren’t on the regular tour. Plus, you can gain a special look into the center if you aren’t able to visit it. After reading the book, I feel like I’ve been to the center myself.
Saving the Big Cats is one of the most touching and beautiful books I’ve ever experienced. (I checked it out from my local library last weekend.) You’ll not only see expressive photos of these majestic felines, but you also gain insightful glimpses into their personalities from someone who has spent time around them. Not only that, but you will grow to appreciate this rescue center that is sometimes the only hope for abused and neglected big cats. McCloud explains how each cat came to reside at EFRC.
One of the goals of the book is education on why owning a big cat as a pet isn’t a good idea. You’ll hear stories of some big cats who killed their owners or trainers, and many others who just needed more than the typical person can provide.
I can’t think of a better gift for a big cat lover than this book. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book go to the The Exotic Feline Rescue Center.
If you’ve been to EFRC, please tell us how you liked the tour.
