Saying Farewell to ER

What did the television show ER do for you? I was in college when it premiered in the 90s. One of my roommates was in love with the show. I always thought that was odd considering she had a major germ phobia at the time. She’s told me that she’s cured now.

I used to watch the show too, but as most shows that stay on the air as long as ER, I eventually lost interest. But back to that germ phobia thing. It’s not so odd that my roommate loved the show. I have to admit to being somewhat of a hypochondriac (don’t tell my doctors), and I think that’s why I liked the show. It gave me all new diseases and injuries to ponder!

Although the bloody scenes could be somewhat disturbing, I’m glad that ER was one of the first shows to portray those situations with some shreds of realism. Sure, it was all dramatized, but the magic was in the details.

Will you watch ER’s final episode tonight?

I loved ER. I was an avid fan from the premiere and followed it faithfully for many seasons. I really appreciated the realism that Michael Criton (the show’s creator) was able to bring to life. I also liked the way the lives of the doctors, nurses, students (and such) were portrayed. There was a lot of dysfunction and complications because their work took up so much of their lives. Although I stopped watching the show a few seasons ago I did watch this season faithfully, which I think was a treat for all the original and early fans. I even blogged about an episode myself because it corresponded to World Kidney Day. I believe ER was a great work of drama. It should stand out in television history (maybe like William Carlos Williams’ Doctor’s Stories). Hopefully, many new fans will be made in syndication and DVD ‘heaven’.

  2. Hi Alisa. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I think the show did try to educate people sometimes, which is good. The final one seemed to focus on alcohol poisoning, something I’m sure young people misunderstand.
