School Bans Hoodies

How many of you remember those hooded sweatshirts? Well this is one thing my son is actually requesting to be placed on his Christmas list this year.

Thankfully he doesn’t attend St. Mark’s Charter School or Andale Elementary because they are banning hooded sweatshirts this year from school property. Why? The pocket in the front.
Confused yet? Well they seem to have figured out how to text their friends using the pockets to keep their phones in. Here’s what one student told Eyewitness News 12:
“The reason we can’t have those anymore,” continued Finney, “is because of our text messaging during class.”
The seventh grader demonstrated how students would sneak the cell phones (which are off-limits during school hours) in class.
“We had them in our pockets and they’d vibrated. So then we’d take it out and bring it to the side and type, and we could memorize our keyboards, because most of us have full keyboards.”
See how clever they have become? There’s no need to take keyboarding anymore, just assign every child a cell phone. (that really is a joke, please don’t take that seriously) Parents are actually upset that the school has banned an article of clothing, however would they not get upset if their child was failing because they weren’t paying attention? Either way this was a no win for the school, they did the one thing they thought was best for the students and that was to take away the item in which was a distraction.
A nearby school decided children could wear hoodies as long as the pockets in the fronts were sewn shut. For those that may not know the Renwick school district, which all three of the above schools are part of has already banned cell phones at school, so this was just their next step on enforcing that rule.

Nice article, Eliza. I was wondering what all the fuss was about. I honestly cannot understand why parents are so upset about this — the kids brought this on themselves. If the parents of these kids are going to get upset because their kids will no longer be able to wear hoodies, then they need to suggest an alternate (and equally appropriate) consequence. Detention is just not cutting it anymore, folks.
Just take away the phone when you catch a kid texting.
