Scrap Rubber Ring (Part 1)

On Friday, I showed you the ring above. I mentioned that it was made from rubber, fake sinew, and a steel rivet.
To begin making this ring, you need an old inner tube. I happened upon one in a dumpster a while back. You may remember me posting instructions for how to make a small journal from part of it. You will also need scissors, pen and graph paper, a leather sewing needle, black sinew, and a rivet with the rivet setters.
First, you will need to measure the finger you want to wear the ring on. I have instructions for that in my Scrap Leather Ring post.
Next, you will want to lay out the dimensions on your graph paper, so that you can make your mistakes on paper. You will need two strips of rubber for this ring–keep in mind that the outside layer will need to be longer than the inside, if you want the edges to meet up when you form the ring.
Now, cut out the pattern you’ve made and tape it to the rubber. Cut around the edges CAREFULLY–the ring will look strange if the edges don’t meet up around the outside of the ring.
Next time, we’ll talk about stitching around the ring and the rivet. Good luck with today’s installment.
