Screw You, Tyra

Please, I beg of you, do not watch this episode of the Tyra Banks Show which asks:
Do You Know A Woman Obsessed with Being Pregnant?
According to Tyra and her producers, this woman obsessed will be characterized by “unvoiced jealousy,” silent “desperation” and will walk around “disappointed and heartbroken.” This woman uses “extreme methods” and has spent a lot of money chasing this dream of motherhood.
Because she is so altruistic, Tyra wants to give you, the caring friend of a misguided infertile, a forum in which to tell her “she needs to stop the emotional and physical stress on her body and seriously consider adoption or a surrogate alternative.”
Because, obviously, adoption and surrogacy are so frigging easy.
The description of the episode is shocking when contrasted with the request that the Tyra Banks show sent to Resolve earlier this week which looked like this:
The producers of the Tyra Banks Show are looking for women and men in the New York City area to share their experiences coping with infertility on an upcoming show. They are interested in hearing from both couples and women and men individually on how you’ve dealt with the emotional ups and downs of infertility and found inspiration to keep trying. The show will be taped on January 10 in New York City…
Thing is, I was actually going to post this casting call here when I saw it on Resolve’s site. But then I remembered a scenario from college, in which several feminist leaders on campus were invited to talk on another talk show – free trip to NYC, all expenses paid, a forum for your most important issues, right? Only to find that they had been totally set up. The episode was not about strong young women, it was meant to attack the idea of the “militant feminist,” this most unfeminine of females, ones that are actually willing to stand up for injustice and bullshit.
This, dear Tyra, is bullshit. And for some reason, I sensed malicious intent from the get go.

Mel from Stirrup Queens has already contacted Resolve. Resolve assured her that they were just as surprised at the blurb and were addressing things with the Tyra Banks Show.
Dozens of women (fertile and infertile. There should be no distinction here) have already contacted Tyra and the Show expressing their outrage. I am going to do the same, as soon as I calm the hell down.

THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE OBSESSED WITH BEING PREGNANT AND IT IS NOT HEALTHY TO BE OBSESSED WITH ANYTHING. I have friend’s who lost EVERYTHING because SHE wanted to be pregnant so bad….a homeless shelter is no place to raise a child and that’s almost where they were. There should be some psychological evaluation BEFORE assisted pregnancy options are carried out. TYRA wasn’t BERATING people….but people who have psychological obsessions only see it as being attacked or ridiculed. It’s really about their selfishness and guilt.
EVERYTIME I see a child GROW UP IN THE WELFARE SYSTEM I am outraged that these selfish people couldn’t give their love to a child who wants and needs parents as much as or more than these people will go through to TRY have a child. Some people simply aren’t meant to conceive whether it’s due to genetic incompatibility (it exists), health or a host of other reasons. THEY WILL SPEND MILLIONS on a dream but won’t even give 10 cents worth of thought to adopting a child OR they will go to FOREIGN countries and buy babies and leave tens of thousands of parentless AMERICAN (mostly non-white) children stranded in the system. People are selfish…there ARE children for them to have and they are too self centered to see them. If they can’t give themselves to a child with no parent WHY do they deserve to BE parents? UNWANTED BABIES ARE BORN EVERYDAY and these couples sit and cry about NOT being able to have their own????? Don’t give me the sob story…they can’t see the forest for the trees. I WAS ONE OF THOSE KIDS! I have twins of my own and ADOPTED another older child because he needed parents and we could be that for him. You have to GIVE to receive. Love should be unconditional and they REALLY wanted to be parents they would be. DNA has nothing to do with LOVE.
