Seafood Guide for Travel

Have you ever sat in a restaurant, perhaps on vacation, confronted with the choice of red snapper from the Gulf of Mexico or Dungeness crab? Maybe you wondered which is more responsibly fished, but took a wild guess.

If you have an iPhone, you can download the free Seafood Watch app, and you’ll never have to wonder again. The handy app presents you with fish in alphabetical order labeled as “Best Choice,” “Good Alternative,” or “Avoid.” You can search for fish by region (like Northeast) or go to the national guide. There’s also a sushi guide. You may click on the fish to get more info, including market names and health alerts.

If you don’t have an iPhone, no problem. You can either get a pocket guide to take with you on your travels, or go online to Seafood Watch by the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

By the way, you should choose the Dungeness crab over red snapper on any day. Red snapper, particularly from the Gulf, is overfished.
