Seasonal Flu is Late – Still Time for Flu Shot

Iowa health officials have announced that seasonal flu is making a late, and strong, appearance in that state.  Nationwide, seasonal flu is peaking later in the year than normal and that means that there is still time to get a flu shot.

Please remember that:

  • You CANNOT get the flu from the flu shot.  If you get the flu or some other virus, it is a coincidence.
  • Even if you get the flu shot late, and still contract the flu upon an exposure, the vaccine will lessen the effects.
  • There is no flu shot shortage this year.  Contact your physician or public health agency.  A local hospital will also know where flu shots can be located.
  • Flu shots are not expensive.  Unfortunately, not all insurances cover the vaccine (but ironically do cover the medical care if you get the flu), but it is still cheaper to pay for the flu shot than to miss a week or two of work.
