sewing wasps nests?

I’m not a big fan of wasps – I once had one climb into one of my gloves and sting the back of my hand multiple times, not fun! Decoy wasp nests (most commonly made from paper or interfacing-like material) are supposed to discourage wasps from hanging around your house, porch or wherever you hang them.

My mom is crocheting one for her house (the decoys are so popular that most local gardening stores have sold out!). Well, that got me thinking – if she can crochet one, I bet I can sew one.

I dug through my stash and came up with these fabrics:

wasp decoys

Those look kind of wasp-nesty to me…

I only have 4 inch wide strips (I bought most of those prints for making appliqued mountains on a wall hanging) so I’m going to sew the strips together. I think I’m going to go for a simple tube of fabric, gathered at the top and bottom – I don’t think I want to get crazy with the shaping for this project :-)

I’ll share the results of my experiment when I see if it works…

  1. Great idea, Chloe!
Your Dad is also going to try turning them on the lathe.
    Hopefully, we’ll be a wasp-free family!
Looking forward to seeing your sewn one.

These fabrics will make a very pretty wasp nest. You have enlightened me today. I’ve never heard of a wasp nest decoy.

Have a look as you walk in to the barn next visit Chloe. We have had an interesting time making such a variety of nests. Hope they all work.
