S&H Theme Day: Obesity And Cancer

science & health theme day Did you know that obesity can lead to cancer? According to Cancer.gov’s website, around 41,000 new cases of cancer reported in the U.S. alone in 2002 was estimated to be due to obesity. I was totally unaware of this statistic until I recently did some research online. Another report shared that about 20% of deaths in women in the U.S. were due to overweight and obesity.

This website also shares some startling statistics regarding obesity and breast cancer. It states that between 11,000-18,000 deaths per year from breast cancer in women ages 50+ in the U.S. might be prevented if women could maintain a BMI under 25 throughout their adult lives. One of the biggest reasons why breast cancer is a huge threat to obese women is because the cancer is usually much more difficult to detect and diagnose until at a much later stage.
