Shopping changes after time!

I’m used to buying presents for young kids these days. At one time it might have given me a coronary to try to find something good for kids between 2 and 5 or 6, but then I had my own, and it’s not too hard to figure out. I generally check with the parents to make sure the child doesn’t already have what I was thinking of (no one needs two identical Polly Pocket sets, after all), but it’s pretty easy.
Our friends are having us over tomorrow for their oldest daughter’s birthday, and she’s turning eight. I suddenly realized I have no clue what to get for someone that age, someone who’s not a tween but not a little kid either. I had to ask her mom and I tentatively asked about CDs. She thought that was a great idea and suggested some of the music she’s into, such as Hannah Montana and The Cheetah Girls. That’s a whole other world to me, I don’t have kids who watch those things (although my five-year-old seemed interested in the latter because of the Cheetah part of the name). It seems so funny to go out and buy CDs because it’s for someone who’s not that into dolls anymore. Granted we gave our oldest a Carrie Underwood CD on her birthday but that was because we had gotten her a little CD player for her room to listen to music at night. But still. I’m so used to little dolls and sets that require assembly and whatnot.
I can’t imagine what it will be like when we have to start shopping for teenagers!
