Should Women have to Limit Embryos?
Since Nadya Suleman gave birth to octuplets January 26 people all over the country have been debating whether or not her doctors should have implanted so many embryos. The debate has actually become a national medical issue: one that the government would like to address.
Republican Ralph Hudgens, a state senator in Georgia has proposed legislation that would allow no more than two embryos to be implanted at a time in a woman younger than 40. For women older than 40 the legislation would limit the number to three.
Seriously?
I know that the “standard” is usually two-three embryos and any more is usually just overkill but for people like me the chances of conceiving are fo limited that for the government to limit my chances to conceiving is like a country telling me I can only have one child.
In my opinion, this bill would be devastating to hundreds of thousands of families trying to conceive using in-vitro.
What needs to happen is that doctors need to think about what they are doing. For a doctor to implant six embryos into a woman with six children already is disastrous.
But, for a doctor to implant three or four with the hopes of one taking? Hopeful.
