Should you travel while pregnant?

Vacations can be few and far between. If you planned your vacation before you discovered you were pregnant or the opportunity comes up, should you still go? Well, it all depends on where, when and how, according to the American College of Obstetricians and
Gynecologists.
A lot of your decision really depends on where you are going. Do your travel plans include visiting countries where the sanitation system may be questionable? Is the food preparation where you are going considered to be safe? Will there be adequate medical care where you are going in case of emergency?
If you were planning on visiting a country that has standards similar to those in North America, then sanitation shouldn’t be a worry but it is always best to speak with your doctor before traveling.
How are you traveling? Will you be flying? Driving? How long will it take to get to your destination? If you are flying, be aware that some airlines have restrictions as to how far along a woman can be to be allowed to fly. For your comfort, you should see if you can ask ahead for a bulkhead seat – this gives you more space. Get up and walk around as much as you can to keep your blood circulating and if you have an aisle seat, you don’t have to worry about how many times you need to get up.
Traveling by train is a comfortable option but can be confining if the seats are too close together. Try to sit near a bathroom if you can to access it easier when you need it.
Cruise ships are great ways to see the world, but keep in mind that some people get sea sick and you may have a problem with this when you’re pregnant, especially if you can’t take medication for it. Also, check to see if the cruise line has restrictions to how far along pregnant women can be to be on board.
Traveling by car can be a good way to travel when you’re pregnant because you can stop when you need to. You should make frequent stops not only to use the bathroom, but to stretch your legs and give your back a break. Be sure to wear your seatbelt to keep yourself safe in case of an accident. It’s also recommended that you push your seat as far back as you can from the dashboard.
If your doctor has okayed your travel, then go have fun and enjoy your trip!
